Custom Watercolor Commissions: Turn Your Favorite Things Into Timeless Art
I’m thrilled to announce that custom commissions are now open again! After the enthusiastic response during Richmond’s Historic Garden Week, many of you have asked how you can have your own meaningful still life painted in watercolor.
One of the highlights of this year’s tour was seeing two of my original paintings featured in the beautiful home of Jennifer Hudgins on South Gaskins. The painting in her dining room - a vibrant collection of her “favorite things” - quickly became a favorite among visitors.
The Story Behind Jennifer’s Painting
A few months ago, I had the joy of visiting Jennifer’s home to discuss her vision for a custom piece. We sat together as she shared the special objects she wanted included - each one holding deep sentimental value.
Among them was the champagne bottle saved from their wedding day. There were also cherished blue-and-white porcelain pieces, crystal glassware, fresh flowers, and other meaningful items that reflect her life and style. Jennifer wanted a classic still life, but with some abstract qualities to make it more dynamic and interesting.
The reflections on the glossy table surface added wonderful pops of color and playful shapes, bringing extra life and movement to the composition. It was such a fun and collaborative process watching her favorite things come to life on paper. Seeing the finished painting hanging in her dining room during Historic Garden Week, surrounded by her actual flowers, crystal, and decor was incredibly rewarding.
This piece is a perfect example of what a custom commission can be: a personal, one-of-a-kind artwork that tells your unique story.
What Makes a “Favorite Things” Commission Special?
Every custom watercolor I create is tailored just for you. Popular themes include:
- Wedding or anniversary mementos (champagne bottles, invitations, rings, etc.)
- Family heirlooms and treasured objects
- Favorite flowers or garden elements
- Travel souvenirs and collected treasures
- A beautiful mix of items that represent your personality and memories
I work closely with you from the very beginning. You’ll share photos and stories of the items you’d like included, and we’ll collaborate on composition, size, and style — including how much realism versus abstract expression you prefer.
The result is a luminous watercolor painting filled with meaning, color, and personality that you’ll treasure for years to come.
