Christmas Home Tour – Meet Molly Gorman

We have a very special Christmas Home Tour today. Meet Molly Gorman and welcome to her beautiful home decorated for the holidays! Molly and her husband Steve live in Richmond with their three sons, Justin (15) Patrick (15) and Nathan (11) along with their sweet Black Lab, Abby. This home tour is so special because every room is filled with holiday collectibles that have wonderful stories behind them, rich in tradition.

Christmas Home Tour – Meet Molly Gorman

To get to know Molly and her family a little better, I asked her a few questions about their holiday traditions.

What is one of your favorite holiday decorations? “There is a walnut owl that my Grandfather made. He was invited to make one for the White House Christmas Tree by Betty Ford in 1975. We even have the book that tells you how to make all the ornaments that were on the tree that year. All of our ornaments are special. They were mostly collected from our travels. We get an ornament no matter where we go – everyone is always on the lookout for one on each trip. It is really fun for the whole family to see them every year and reminisce. We seem to add about 5 a year from our travels. I still insist all of the kids hand made ornaments go on our family tree as well. We all love the fun memories every year when we decorate.”

What is one of your favorite family traditions? “Legendary Santa – We have taken our boys every year – even when they were just babies. My favorites are the screaming toddler pictures. They make us laugh year after year. My parents always took us to Legendary Santa when he was at Miller & Rhodes and my Dad went when he was a kid as well. It’s a long standing tradition.”

What is your favorite Christmas movie? “Hmm… With the family laughing everytime – A Christmas Story. All by myself with a glass of wine – It’s a Wonderful Life.”

I love this sweet vignette in the hallway. The silver bell ornament was given to Molly when she was born. Her husband found the shell when diving off the coast of Massachusetts. The Grandfather clock in the corner was made by her Grandfather. He actually made clocks for each of his grandchildren.

Dining Room

I love her silver centerpiece with white candles and fresh evergreens. Molly enjoys using her silver during the holidays. These candlesticks are all handed down from her grandmother and Steve’s grandmother.Did you notice the stunning grasscloth wallpaper. Oh, it’s even more stunning in person.

Living Room

Molly is one talented lady. Take a close look at the rug in the living room. Molly hand stenciled the pattern on it. It’s amazing.

She created the most stunning vignette for her coffee table: Silver vases and pink peonies, Johnathon Adler zebra plate, cross lantern {Wisteria}.

Molly has the eye and vision for fun DIY projects. She found this ladies vanity chair, and gave it a complete makeover. She sanded it first. Then gilded and waxed it to look aged. To complete the ensemble, she added an antique box, and found this amazing crown from Homegoods.

On the Mantle, there is an extraordinary clock, three generations old. The elaborate prelit garland is from Ballard Designs. Just gorgeous!

Now enter the sun porch, or better known as the “girlfriend wine room”. It’s decorated in happy bright colors. Molly and her dad actually made this swing from her own childhood bed. How sweet is that?

Kitchen and Breakfast Area

This recently renovated kitchen is my favorite! First of all, I love a black and white kitchen, and the simple greens with the monogrammed wreath is so classc and beautiful. It’s breath-taking really.

The breakfast area has a built-in bench and the chopping block came from her dad’s grocery store in Fluvanna.

Family Room

What is your favorite room in your home to decorate and why? “I love decorating the Family Room. It is where we spend the majority of our time.  My family gets involved and helps with the holiday decorating – especially with the tree. Then we get to enjoy our nice cozy and festive room!”

I honestly have to say that the best part of the home tour was seeing the decorated sports bucket and basket by the back door. When you have three boys in the house, the sports gear is all around, so why not highlight it? Also, Abby was the best tour guide, but by the end of the day, she was ready for her nap.
