Holiday Home Tour – Mimi and Mark Dickinson

Today I am thrilled to introduce you to Mimi and Mark Dickinson’s holiday home tour. From festive red poinsettias and boxwood arrangements to candy canes and gingerbread houses, entering Mimi and Mark’s home makes you feel welcome and happy. In addition, their beautiful outdoor landscaping and holiday arrangements rival any home tour in Better Homes and Gardens magazine. {Maybe they should visit.} Their home, Longacre was built in 1951. In the first five minutes of meeting Mimi and Mark, I could tell how passionate they are about where they live. See what they both had to say about their home and celebrating the holidays with their family.

Mimi, what are some of your favorite holiday traditions? “My husband Mark is the true visionary in the house. He must come by it naturally. His grandmother was an artist. He enjoys decorating the tree more than I so I leave that to him and my two children Breese and Louise while I love to cut the boxwood, make all the wreaths, and make the table decorations. Cooking is another hobby. We enjoy making the cookies and fudge sauce that I deliver with a container of peppermint ice cream to our friends and family. Both our children know that Christmas is coming when I pull out all the Christmas Spoede china. I grew up with this collection and over the years have added several fun pieces that I hope to pass onto my children.”

Mimi, what is your favorite thing about your home? “My favorite thing about the house is how easy it is to entertain. I use the entire house inside and out. Even in bad weather the back porch has a wonderful high ceiling that hangs over the gardens and serves as a tent for those who enjoy the outdoors. Mark has landscaped the grounds around the house with seasonal planting so at anytime I can have fresh cut flowers or greens to decorate the house. That truly is my favorite part of the house. It is one longacre.”

Mark, tell us about the history of your home. “We feel very fortunate to have been able to have purchased the property from the original family who built it. Prior to acquiring this property, we lived next door in a house that was owned by the daughter of the gentleman who built our home.  On relocating, we didn’t go far. We engaged in about 2 years of renovation and reconstruction and were blessed to have Frank Bushey from Cavetown Planing Mill pretty much orchestrate the job. For better or worse, I am responsible for all the landscaping and Mimi feels my time in the yard has kept me from needing to visit a shrink, she’s probably right.”
