Heather and David McQuillin Christmas Home Tour

I am thrilled to introduce you to Heather and David McQuillin and share their chic holiday home tour full of surprising and inspiring DIY home projects. They live in the historic Fan district of Richmond, and their beautifully decorated home is on the Annual Fan Holiday House Tour this weekend {Dec 10 & 11 from 1-6 p.m}. If you are local, it’s a must see!

Holiday Mantel Decorating Ideas - Turquoise and Gold

Heather and David moved to Richmond from Boston after stints in Sweden and Belgium. As you tour their home, not only will you see the influence from their travels, but you will also get a sense of how much they love taking on large and small home DIY projects. Interesting fact: This Fan home was previously separated into apartments but it had been restored to a home when they bought it. Since then, they have been busy making many improvements to their home, as you will see in this tour.

Heather and David McQuillin Home Tour – Front Entrance

Let’s start with the newel post in the front hall, which is absolutely the most creative DIY ever. The glass ball was Heather’s vision that David brought to life.  She found the inspiration on Pinterest and went on the hunt for a glass ball. After searching and searching, she finally found one at a magic shop! David designed and crafted the ornate newel post with a unique stand for the magical ball.

Heather and David McQuillin Home Tour – Living Room

Feast your eyes on this all white living room with blue and gold holiday accents. It’s everything. The colors in the stunning large abstract by Mary Kathryn Holden Woodward bring the room together. I’m obsessed with their IKEA “hack” coffee table, yet another awesome DIY project they had fun making. They painted the table gold then gold leafed over it. Doesn’t it look amazing? But why stop there? They also gave the fireplace a facelift by repairing the tile and refinishing the inserts.

If you notice the back of the secretary, it’s painted a faint blue color. Heather’s tip: She painted a thin lauan board from the hardware store, and placed it in-between the shelves and the back of the secretary. It’s easily removable when she wants to change it out.

Family Room

I could live in this room. Seriously. The family room brings cozy to a whole new level. Heather likes to add new holiday decor every year, and this year she added an all white Christmas tree with glass ornaments. She made the wreath from white boas intertwined together. Is there anything she can’t do?

Dining Room

I could not take my eyes off this stunning tablescape in the dining room. Heather thinks of every detail. The table runner is simply folded fabric with long ribbons laid down on top of the fabric, creating an inviting and festive atmosphere. She tie-dyed the napkins using the Shibori method adding geometric pattern and color. Oh! And she and her husband made the chandelier. Yes, they made it themselves! It was inspired by several designers and ideas she had admired online.

I absolutely love how Heather fills bowls in her home with carefully selected ornaments to match the color scheme in the room. So easy and so festive!

If you are entertaining, here is Heather’s decorated mantle tip: Start with a base layer of faux greens to get started earlier in the week and a then add fresh greens to finish off the day of your party. That way you don’t leave everything to the last minute.

Home Office

I had to end with Heather’s sweet home office. One of her favorite holiday decorations is this tiny tree adorned with ornaments handmade by her grandmother. These tiny treasures are priceless.
